Outlier Mat Minute: Butterfly Half Guard Passing - Upper Body Connection
Butterfly half guard is tricky to pass, but it has one big weakness: it doesn’t force the top player to pressure forward. That gives us an opening to pass on the outside.
Leg Drag: Made famous by Levi, the leg drag is a great way to pass butterfly half guard.
Troubleshooting: If the guard player connects to us with their arms (like an overhook), we can no longer use the leg drag. Good half guard players start with a knee shield, connect their arms, then move into butterfly half—removing the weakness of butterfly half guard.
Break Connection: To use the leg drag, we first need to break the arm connection. Once broken, we can go into outside passing.
